Pre Xmas Mini Book Haul

Hi Peeps

Had a trip to Leeds the other day and went into my favourite shop - Waterstones,Leeds.

Usually every year I buy myself a present.   The last two years were Classic Dandy Annuals but as I was in Waterstones I thought I'd buy a sequel to a series I'd already started collecting.

It was a toss up between Anna Smith Spark's third novel in Empires of Dust or RJ Barker's second Tide Child book.

As the Empires of Dust book wasn't there I got the one above.

Anyway hope you are all well and making the most of Xmas as it is.

December 2020 Update

Hi Peeps

Hope you are all well and Covid free!

Well like most people this year I have my Xmas decorations up early (if you can call them decorations lol).

Plus as with most other people am willing 2020 to be over and done with and in 2021 there may be a glimmer of normality.

Currently I'm job searching for Admin/Office jobs as a priority.

Reading wise I'm still behind on "Last Argument of Kings" by Joe Abercrombie but hope to finish it by Saturday 12th.

That should give me time to read 2 Doctor Who books and bring total books read in 2020 up to 10!

Writing wise I attended Cleckheaton Writing Groups latest Zoom meeting which went well and has managed to gain 2 new members - Andrea and Ashley.

There was a Xmas short story challenge given which I hope to start on Monday 7th December, as I've a great yet dark take on Santa.

Well hope everyone is managing to get through these awful times and fingers crossed there will be Pubs still open at the end of it!

Birthday Book Haul

Hi Folks

Just a quick post to show my Birthday Book Haul from the GF.

I can't wait to get into them although it may be a while.  I still have John Gwynnes first series to read.  The Faithful and the Fallen series which I've only heard good things about and as John writes similar to David Gemmell then I'm in for a treat.

So far this is what I'll  be reading for the next three to five months.

Finish "Last Argument of Kings" by Joe Abercrombie.

Read 2 Doctor Who books in December to get me up to 10 books read this year.

In January read another Doctor Who book.  The final one in the 10 book set.

Then read all 4 books in David Gemmell's "Rigante" series.

Then read "Best Served Cold" by Joe Abercrombie.

Next is a Sci-fi book or Doctor Who book as a fantasy break.

Then hope to start John Gwynnes "The Faithful and the Fallen" series with "Malice" in May and get most read by July for Edge-lit.

So what's your reading plans people?

November 2020 - Update - Birthday/Lockdown/Nanowrimo and more ..

Hi Peeps

Well as you see from the photos above we are now going from a bright multi-coloured Autumn to a bleak Lockdown mid-winter.  Not very good especially when my birthday is in November but it is what it is!

Just hope there is some normality and toilet rolls by Xmas.

Writing Update - Sadly I've not been doing any writing over the last month as I've been concentrating all my efforts into an online Business Admin Course which took longer than I thought it would but have now just finished. Hooray.

This means I can get back to my short story "The Cubbyhole", which I will finish this month and may go back to my novel.  I have decided not to do Nanowrimo (November National Writing Month), as I've not prepped anything and instead of starting yet another novel I want to finish the ones I've started.

Reading Update - I've got behind on my reading over the last two months, as I'm only on my 8th book - Last Argument of Kings by Joe Abercrombie.  I was hoping to be on my 11th and read 12 books this year.  One per month.

As it is once I've finished LAOK by Joe Abercrombie this month I aim to read 2 Doctor Who books which are small quick reads and get my reading number to 10.

So that this year for the first time I'll have hit double figures with 10 books.  I don't know how some people can read that or near that in a month - crazy.

Then in 2021 I aim to double my reading figure and read 20 books.  Wish me luck!

Well chat soon - cheerio x take care.

Book Review - Before They Are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie

Books read in 2020  -  No 7.

Hi Folks

Hope you're all well in these crazy times.  My approach?  I like to visit other worlds.  That's why I read. Especially Sci-fi and Fantasy.

Sadly I started Joe Abercrombie's second book in his First Law Trilogy, "Before They Are Hanged" way back on 23rd July.  That means it has took about 2 months and 2 weeks to read.  I was wanting to be on book 10 of books I read in 2020 by now, or more besides.

I think this has been due to job searching , starting an online admin business course and a bit of a reading slump.  Also why I faltered near the beginning of the book is because Bayaz, the first of the Magi, a wizard type gives some back story.  This is about demons living with men in the past and one of the demons betraying his kind, sending them to the underworld.  This was too similar to the back story of David Gemmells "Winter Warriors".  Which I read earlier this year.

Well I got over that, as a lot of these low fantasy, grimdark books have similar themes and I carried on with the book.  The first quarter of the book starts slow.  Again fleshing out the characters in book one and getting them used to their new settings and situations.

Bayaz, the first of the Magi has taken Logen "Ninefingers", Ferro, the feral woman and Jezal on the quest to find a magical stone called the "Seed".  This is to rid the world of evil Eaters.  They go through different countries and it's here we see more of Joe Abercrombie's world.  Very impressive it is too with his great prose and detail.

Glokta the tortured broken torturer, has been sent South to the city of Dagoska to find a traitor and hold off a siege by the Gurkish Empire.  It's an interesting city showing the Union people at the top and the dark skinned natives at the bottom in the slums. There is some parallel with our world and race issues.  Again Glokta is a favourite and flawed character where you see his true inner thoughts.

Major West and the rest of Nine-fingers old gang of Nothern men including Dogman, Dow and Threetrees are up North fighting the tyrant Bethod and they go through some growth too.

After the first quarter, setting up the above situations, the action kicks in with gusto.  There is a lot more action than "The Blade Itself ".  From the siege of Dagoska to a big battle up North and it is all detailed and gruesome.   I think the action Joe writes is on par with David Gemmell.

Overall - a great second book from Joe Abercrombie which delves deeper into his world.  It still has great character work and more action.  Plus it also delves into the politics of the world and back stabbing politicians and Lords.  I'm just annoyed it took so long to read when it is a great read.

October 2020 - Update

Hi Folks

Happy Halloween 🎃 Month!

Hope you are all well and safe especially in these trying times and with the virus that shall not be named still around.

But it is now Fall! One of my favourite times of year where it's nice to stay in, safe from the virus, with a book or writing or watching TV whilst it gets cold outside and pisses down.

Although it is a good time to go walking too when dry. With the leaves a multitude of colour - brown, red, orange and yellows and at the end of a walk a warm pub invites you in.

My plans for this Fall include -

Job searching - office or writing work.

Admin course - should be finished this month.

Writing - Finishing The Cubbyhole ghost story.

More Blogging

Reading - Finish Joe Abercrombies "Before they are Hanged" which I bloody started in July so been reading it 2 months and nearly 2 weeks but it really good.  I want to start and finish the final book in the First Law Trilogy "Last Argument of Kings" in October and if possible a spooky Dr Who book " The Weeping Angel" in time for Halloween. Need to catch up.

Plus celebrate my daughter's 13th Birthday.

Anyway hope you have a great October!

Hard to get Book Haul

Hi folks

A small haul this month but important.

As you see from the pics above I have managed at last after years searching to find the first Legends - Stories in Honour of David Gemmell.

I got books 2 and 3 when they came out but missed the first book as it was sold out and only so many made.  Then I looked on Fishpond.co.uk and found it to complete the set. Now I can start the short story anthologies.

Created to help finance the David Gemmell Fantasy Awards these are short stories in David's heroic fantasy style by some of the best fantasy writers about including Stan Nicholls, Stella Gemmell, Joe Abercrombie, Andy Remic, John Gwynne, RJ Barker, Justina Robson, Juliet E McKenna to name but a few and edited by Ian Whates.

I also found Transformers: Exodus and Exiles by Alex Irvine.

I've been after these years too after seeing them in the Works but not buying them.

Exodus was from Fishpond.co.uk and Exiles from Amazon US and both the small mass paperbacks but I'm ok with that.

They follow the start of the war on Cybertron and their journey in space chasing the Allspark to Earth. I think they are prequels to Transformers: Prime which is a great animated series from 2010 and now on Netflix.

Happy Reading Folks!!!

Mid September Update - RIP Terry Goodkind

RIP - Terry Goodkind 11/1/48 - 17/9/20

Sadly another great fantasy writer who came out in the 80s/90s has passed away. 2020 sucks even more now.

Terry Goodkind was best known for his Sword of Truth series, starting with Wizards First Rule, will be sadly missed and joins the other great sci-fi and fantasy authors of the 80s/90s who have passed including David Gemmell, David Eddings and Terry Pratchett.

He was 72 years old.

With that in mind I hope surviving 80s authors will last long like Terry Brooks, Raymond E Feist and George RR Martin who are all in their 70s and still working.

This is especially true for George RR Martin who has the huge task of finishing his Song of Ice and Fire series.

So far I have only read Wizards First Rule which took over a year to read but I had some personal issues to deal with so wish I had read it at a different time. I did enjoy it although was slow in the middle and I gave it a 7/10.

I hope to read a couple more in the series next year as I have the first 7 books.

September Update - Reading and writing - Edge-Lit 2020 Cancelled

Hi Peeps

Well it's already September and the 2020 Covid curse strikes again!

I was looking forward to going to Derby to Edge-lit in July but it was moved to November.   This morning on Facebook I found out the event in 2020 is cancelled altogether.

This may be a good thing if there are still some restrictions like so many people in a room.  Hopefully it will be back in full form next year.  Alex Davies who organises the event is doing a brilliant job so far and I wish him well and give my support for the 2021 event.  Roll on 2021!

Other than Edge-lit I'm behind reading "Before they are Hanged" by Joe Abercrombie.  So I will be concentrating on that and its sequel "Last Argument of Kings".  I hope to finish both by the end of September.

I'm also writing again so will try to do as much as possible in September including finishing The Cubbyhole.

Also I plan to do an IT Course and still job searching.

Plus my gym opens this month so want to try to go back.

How's your plans for September?

Writing Again!

Hi Folks

I'm glad to announce I'm back writing again, after nearly 2 years in hiatus.  The main reason I haven't written is I had a confidence issue with my writing.   Thinking myself and my writing wasn't good enough.  Worrying I was getting things wrong like grammar and punctuation.

Even though I've still had story ideas and been buying Writing Magazine in that time I still couldn't get myself to open my laptop.

Thanks to Karen, Gemma and the rest of Cleckheaton Writing Group and Ribbon Tree Cafe I was persuaded to join their weekly writing sessions lured by chocolate cake and the fact I haven't seen them for a good 5 months or more.

I have now started to finish The Cubbyhole - a ghost story, then I will continue my novel Colony X and try to get the first draft finished by December.

I will look at trying to get published, either by a publishing company or self-published.  Otherwise what is the point?  Well the fun and challenge of Writing is a great point but being published is the main focus and end game for most writers.

So far I've been published once in Cleckheaton Writing Group's Anthology Reflections.  Now I need to build on this.  Maybe I will enter short story competitions too.

Do other Writers have a crisis of Confidence?  If so let me know in the comments and how you overcame the issue.

Thanks

Update - Writing Group - Gemmell vs. Abercrombie - Writing Mag - Sci-fi Now

 Hi Folks

Just a quick update on what I've been up to in the last few weeks.  Hope you are all safe.

Firstly I've still not done any writing but after having an excellent Zoom meeting the other Monday with my writing group (Cleckheaton Writing Group), they talked me into going on a writing course.   I'm still looking at this and have to enrol.

It was great catching up with the group and seeing how far their writing has progressed.  Unfortunately I'm in a reading slump at the moment and still to read their work and give feedback.

Talking of reading slumps, I was wanting to be onto the third book in Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy yet still on "Before they are Hanged".  I'm only about 300 pages in too.  I think this is because some back story in the book is eerily similar to back story in David Gemmell's "Winter Warriors" which I read a few months ago.

The back story involves demons walking the World and one of them turns against their brothers and banishes his fellow demons to the underworld.  This was a main point in "Winter Warriors".  Maybe it is just coincidence with the book being in the same genre and is a familiar trope.  Although there are other similarities with David Gemmells work.

Other than that plot point I'm enjoying "Before they are Hanged" as Joe has written great characters and I love his prose.  I will just steam forward and get it read.

In the pandemic it has been hard to get copies of Writing Magazine.  Although now everything is easing and shops are now open I have still had an hard time finding a new Writing Magazine in WH Smith stores.  These being the Halifax and Bradford branches.  I've ended up buying the magazine in Sainsbury's in Halifax.

Has anyone else had problems finding Writing Magazine in WH Smith stores?

Sad Sci-fi, Fantasy and Publishing news as I've found out Sci-fi Now magazine has gone out of print and will only be available online.  I prefer physical copies.

I used to love this magazine as it had more writing and a larger book section than it's rival SFX Magazine which I also liked but didn't buy as much as I felt it wasn't as good as years before.  But I will purchase SFX Magazine when I can as be even more of a shame if that went too.

Well that's it for a catch up.  I will also be looking at an IT Course to re-teach me some skills and hope get a job.

August Update - Happy Yorkshire Day

Hi guys n gals

August has flown by already.  Maybe it's a good thing that 2020 goes by quickly with the virus that shall not be named plus all the bonkers things happening in 2020.

Well not much news from me.
I'm still job searching although there seems to be less jobs coming through on e-mails.  I think will have to up my game.  Somehow.

I'm still reading "Before they are Hanged" by Joe Abercrombie.  I was hoping to finish this by end of July and start the third in the series by now.  It looks like it will be finished second week of August.

I'm still procrastinating over my writing.  A part of me is afraid to write again for fear of not being any good.  But I realise I need to just get on with it.  I'm sure I've forgotten all about grammar, and where to put commas ect.
Do any other writers feel like this?

Also to add more content on my blog as there are no film reviews, as the cinema's are shut, I'm thinking of doing TV series reviews.
I recently binge watched The Umbrella Academy series 1 and now series 2 is out I will do the same then review both.
I've also binge watched Transformers:War for Cybertron: Siege so expect a review soon.

Other shows I may review are The Boys - series 2 out soon.
Also the underated New Legends of Monkey which has series 2 coming soon.  Been waiting ages for this.
Does anyone want me to review TV shows?

Also I'm thinking of doing an Explore and Paranormal YouTube channel where I explore old buildings stuck in time and maybe look for paranormal.
Although for this I could do with someone close to me who drives who joins me on the explores - is anyone in Brighouse,  Halifax , Cleckheaton area interested?

Well chat later folks!

Juĺy Free Bookhaul - Rest of the Witcher Novels

Hi Peeps

Had a Waterstones gift card to use sat in my wallet since Xmas.  Since I'm now out of work thought I'd use it to get new books as it seemed ages since I had new ones!  Even though I've over 200 on my TBR pile.

So decided to get Sword of Destiny, the second set of short stories in the Witcher novels.
I also wanted book 3 in Anna Smith Sparks, Empire of Dust series as it came out during lockdown.
I looked in both Leeds and Bradford Waterstones for Anna's book but to no success.  So will keep looking bit longer and if no luck then get online eventually.  Then I can read the series fully.

To be honest it felt good being back in Waterstones shops after 4 months.  Looking and smelling all those books.  Although in Bradford it smelt a bit musty with it being an older building.

So just as I was going to give up I saw Sword of Destiny which I wanted and next to it Season of Storms which I totally forgot I needed to complete the set as it's quite new.  It is a prequel to the novels set after the short stories and before the first book.
So now I'm happy I have the complete set till he brings more out.

Any Witcher fans out there that have read them all?  What you think of them?

Well happy reading folks x  my next read is Before They are Hanged by Joe Abercrombie.
I'll also be reading some fiction for writing group to give feedback  ready for our next Zoom meeting.  Plus I hope to write this weekend too.

Book Review - The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie

Books read in 2020 - No. 6

Hi Peeps

Was hoping I would be putting my seventh book review up by now but "The Blade Itself " took longer to read.
I was thinking it would be a David Gemmell copy and so a fast read, although there are some similarities to "Legend", in that it's a gritty realistic fantasy, it is also something else.
Plus both feature clans in the North bonding under one ruler to attack the South.  Both heavily feature an ageing warrior who is well known.  Both have grey anti-hero characters.   Now I've read the book I realise some similarities which feature in most gritty fantasy.  Although this book is also very different.

I've followed Joe Abercrombie's career since he first published "The Blade Itself" in 2006, sadly the same year David Gemmell died.  I wonder if David Gemmell ever read it.

I even met Joe in Leeds Waterstones when he did signings for his short story collection Sharp Ends.

I've bought Joe's First Law books, but been putting off reading them.  This was because when he first arrived on the scene, people compared him to DG.  I didn't want to read his books in case he was better than my favourite author.

David Gemmell is still my favourite but boy is Joe Abercrombie close.  Reading chapters with Logen 'Nine-fingers' seemed like reading the Drenai books.  Although Joe's writing style is different and I think adds more detail.  Certainly he does with character development and World building.

Yes Joe has some great characters including Logen 'Nine-fingers' a "Legend" in the North who has won many fights especially when his Berserker personality comes out but is trying to atone for his past deeds.
Jezal Dan Luthar a promising Fencing champion , although he is big headed.
Inquisitor Sand Glokta a crippled torturer whose mission is to find traitors to the King and the Union.  Glokta is my favourite character and the only one where you get inside his head.
Bayaz the First of the Magi who is an ancient Magician/Wizard who is looking for a powerful object to defeat the evil stirring in the South by the name of the Eaters.
This book has more magic in it than I thought.

There are so many other characters we get to meet and get details of which is the strong point of Joe's writing and book.  That and World building.  The plot is not a strong point but consists of the Union being attacked from the North by Bethod a mad King and also by an Emperor in the South, the Gurkish.
Also in this is Bayaz quest to unite these characters,  to take on a journey for a magical artefact to save the World.
So not the most unique of plots but quite a lot to have going on.  This book is mainly the set up book introducing the main players and how they fit into the story.

Like I've said Joe's characters are brilliant and I really liked his prose once I got into it.  It needed a few tweaks and some phrases repeated but not annoyingly so.  Joe is very good at describing the scenery, people.  Another highlight of his writing is his action and fighting scenes which make you feel like you're there.  Like David Gemmell did.

The main problem is that some parts of the novel dragged, especially when they were in open council as a couple of talking scenes went on for ages.  Although whenever Chancellor Hoff was in charge of the court I kept thinking of Stephen Fry.  Maybe if they make a TV adaption he could be in it.

The final third of the novel picks up the pace with more action and the pieces fitting together.  I also like Logen's old gang who are trapped in the North led by Threetrees and The Dogman.

Overall  -  a fitting first novel for Joe Abercrombie and a great set up for the Trilogy with some brilliant well developed characters and great writing.  Still David Gemmell is my favourite author but Joe is climbing up there and I've heard the second book has more plot going on.  Not seeing the Grimdark thing as David Gemmell books read dark with grey characters and situations.

Score  -   9/10

July 2020 Update - No news is good news

A Summers Day!

Hi Peeps

This is going to be a quick update post as I haven't done a lot lately.   Just been looking for work - which in these times is manic.

I hope in July as well as job search, I want to get my hair cut.  Plus start my writing.  I keep putting of my writing like I'm afraid of doing any.  It feels like sometimes my writing isn't good enough.  I may do a full post on this soon.

Other than the above I need to exercise more and get to the gym when they open.
I also need to speed up my reading as I'm behind on Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself.
I was hoping to have read and reviewed it by now and onto the second one.
So far I'm liking it although there are similarities with David Gemmells work, in particular Legend, but will cover this in the review.  He is a very good writer.

I also want to blog more and get more followers.  Leave a comment if you have any ideas to increase followers and readers and please share.

Here's to July.

June Cheap Book Haul - Witcher novels

Hi Folks

Even though circumstances ain't great and not much money I decided to treat myself to a cheap book haul.

I went to the Works before Lockdown and saw the Witcher books for £5 each - bargain.  Went to the Bradford store yesterday and they looked to be moving stock about and didn't open.  So I thought sod it and got them next day delivery from Works online.

Looked at Amazon and could have got full 8 book box set but for £57.
Waterstones are doing a box set in September but that £62.

The Last Wish short stories I already got for £3 sometime before so got the 5 full novels.  Not bad for £25.
I've still to get another short story collection plus a prequel book but will still work out cheaper.

Mind you the state of the box they arrived in I'm surprised they are in one piece lol.

Happy reading folks! X

Book Review - Race To The Kill by Helen Cadbury

Books Read in 2020  -  No 5!

Hi Guys

At long last I have read the third and sadly final Sean Denton book by Helen Cadbury.
Having met Helen twice at two Cleckheaton Literature Festivals I classed her as a friend who also gave me writing advice on Messenger.
So far I have enjoyed her previous Sean Denton books even though I'm not a huge crime reader.  Although after this I may get onto my Leigh Russell books and maybe other crime books by other authors.

This book blows books one and two out of the water and Helen is at the prime of her writing and storytelling talents weaving intricate plots that at first seem unrelated but join up for a thrilling read.

What I love about all Helen's writing is how easy it is to read and the quick short chapters help propel the book forward at warp speed and before you know it you've been reading for hours.  It took me just over two weeks to read which by my standard is good.

In this third entry into Sean Denton's world in Doncaster, events have moved forward in time.  Sean now lives with his crush Lizzie and has been for six months.  Although something seems off.  His half sister Chloe whom he met in the last book is now living with their Dad looking after him as he is terminally ill.
At work Sean has also moved up to DC (Detective Constable).

But there is so much going on in this book.  A dead homeless man is found in the abandoned old high school.  A rape witness is missing and has missed court and there are unusual activities happening at the Greyhound stadium.

It weaves tales of rape, illegal immigrants and more into the story.  The characters are all third dimensional especially Sean and his mentor DC Ivan Knowles.  Even secondary characters come to life.   When Helen describes the market it feels like you are there.

Overall  -  A fantastic end and farewell to what has been my favourite crime series.  Helen is at the top of her game and if she was still here would probably be writing book five by now.  I would have collected them all too as she would get even better.  Sadly it's not to be and the series is underrated.  It would make a great TV show too.
It was sad reading the last chapter which had a crematorium scene in knowing this will be the last fiction Helen writes.  RIP HELEN XX

Score   -   10/10  - No doubt about It!
