Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker - Film Review - Spoilers
Hi Fellow Jedi
Have now seen the final film in the Skywalker family saga and as I'd heard mixed reviews and bad things about it was pleasantly pleased by it.
Out of the new Disney Trilogy I think The Rise of Skywalker is my favourite then The Force Awakens then Last Jedi.
I think Last Jedi would have suffered any way as it's just filler to get to The Rise of Skywalker and other than Luke's sacrifice isn't really needed.
The film starts off a few years after Last Jedi with the Rebellion built up and Rey (Daisy Ridley) has been training in the Jedi way with Leia (Carrie Fisher) being her mentor.
We also see a flashback to a scene after Return of the Jedi with a young Luke training Leia which was a good call back to the original trilogy .
Across the Galaxy the voice of the Emperor (Ian Mcdiarmid) has been heard so leader of the First Order Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) who was Ben Solo goes in search of the Emperor to destroy him so he would be all powerful.
The Emperor tells him Rey is more powerful and to destroy her. Kylo is also impressed with the Emperor's fleet which have planet destroyer cannons on them instead of making a Death Star.
Kylo goes to pursue Rey who is on a mission to also find the Emperor and destroy him also with the help of Poe, Finn and C3-P0
The action and drama is full on even though the script could have been tweeked as it's basically Force Awakens but instead of searching for Luke they are searching for Palpetine.
Overall - With some great special effects and set pieces including lightsaber battles there are some good nods to the original trilogy and all three main characters show up, Luke, Leia and yes Han Solo!
It is a good close to the saga although like most fans would have loved Luke going up against the Emperor. Also the Emperors death seemed a little rushed.
Score - 9/10

Xmas Book Haul and Geek Stuff
Hi guys
I did well this Xmas thanks to my gf x
I got a collection of original DC novels for Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and Cat Woman.
Yes DC and Marvel now publish novels.
From what I've seen in Waterstones most of the Marvel books are adapted from Graphic Novels though I have seen a couple of original stories.
DC so far have published original novels can't wait to get stuck in as multi million selling YA novelist Leigh Bardugo has written one.
I also got a £20 Waterstones voucher.
Hope you all got what you wanted or deserved and chat later.

Book Review - Winter Warriors by David Gemmell
Hi guys
Well what a poor do. I started Winter Warriors on July 4th 2019 and only just finished it. That's five months!
The reason being life taking over and my laziness as there is nothing wrong with the book and once I was reading it I really enjoyed it.
In fact it's a Drenai novel I should love as it has the realistic gritty nature of war and life but adds extra magic and demons to the mix.
This Drenai novel has more magic and demons than previous novels yet like the other past books is also a good character study.
The story tells of the Demon-lord Anharat pursuing a baby which needs to die in order to let his demons take over earth.
Protecting the baby is a rag tag retired bunch of warriors including Nogusta who is a feared warrior and sees visions. Kebra an excellent bowman and the huge fighter Bison.
As with most of the books I've read of Gemmells it touches on themes of old age, fear of death, honour and love. Plus there is plenty of action although the ending was a bit disappointing as I was expecting a huge battle although the conclusion made sense.
Overall - A typical Gemmell novel with added demons but fun all the same and as ever some great writing. I can't wait to start Hero in the Shadows although once I've read that will have a Gemmell break and read sci-fi or crime as starting to have Drenai fatigue. But rest assured I will return to Gemmell books late 2020.
Score - 7/10 (would have been 8/10 if hadn't took so long and read consistent.
If Goodreads 3 stars.
This was took 4th July when I first started it.
Late December Update
Hi Peeps
Just a quick December update which is later than normal.
This is due to a stomach bug which has knocked me for six and I'm only just getting better.
Well I've still not done any writing but couldn't with this bug so I've decided to make a fresh start in 2020 and get right into my writing, blogging and reading.
Yep this is an early resolution as I need to get serious about my writing and blogging plus I want to get my 200 plus TBR pile down as I've been abysmal at reading in 2019. I've only read four books this year and just finished Winter Warriors which I started on 4th July.
Also in 2020 I want to look at career options and get fit again.
But until then we've Xmas to look forward to!
Catch you later guys.
Neil
P.S. Looked back at reviews and only done two book reviews so with Winter Warriors I've only read three books this year! That is poor!

10 Books/Series that shaped me!
Hi guys
Hope you are all well.
I thought I would share my top ten favorite books or series so far, which have helped shape me as a person, a reader and a writer.
1 - Bangers and Mash by Paul Groves
This is the first series I remember learning to read back in Primary school. I remember the fun and humour of the stories of two naughty chimp brothers Bangers and Mash. Written by Paul Grove in the Seventies it also became a cartoon with a theme song by Chas and Dave.
If it wasn't for these books I wouldn't have liked learning to read.
2 - The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
Another book or selection of books that I read and was read to me at Primary school was The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper.
Our teacher Mrs Yates read The Dark is Rising to us and it gave me my first taste of fantasy. I loved the book and I think she read two more in the series including Greenwitch.
I didn't realise how much it took from Lord of the Rings but I'm seeing the full five novel sequence in one book form and I'm tempted to buy and re-read.
3 - The Ladybird books by various
Yep Comics aren't books but they were such an important part of my reading and writing journey growing up I even made my own Walker Town comics, which were like Whizzer and Chips. Sadly I never kept any.
Nowadays comics are for all ages with graphic novels being popular in the last few decades.
My favourite regular comic was Marvel UKs Transformers. Most of these older stories have been released in graphic novel form in the last few years in a collection. Some of these I have now bought.
I also loved the UK comics above especially Buster. They were very light hearted and fun.
I also collected other comics now and again including Spider-Man and Super Man.
7 - The Belgariad series by David Eddings
As with The Belgariad series The Riftwar Saga is also a recent read. In fact I read it over the last two years and I got the Riftwar Saga in the Nineties. The same time as The Belgariad series from Fantasy and SF Book club.
It starts similar to the Belgariad but instead of Garion, orphan Pug becomes apprentice to Magician Kulgan and eventually is a master Magician.
The epic scope of this series is bigger than the Belgariad as it has the world building of two worlds to deal with. Midkemia and Kelewan. Two very different worlds yet they also have similarities.
Plus there are thousands more people and Raymond E Feist does well to keep it in focus.
I would like to read the other books that come after but there are so many. Maybe one day I'll get round to the sequels.
9 - The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R Tolkien
These books need no explanation. This is the fantasy epic that started the fantasy genre as it is today and possibly without these there would be no Belgariad or Riftwar series, or Dark is Rising. So most of my list would be blank or full of Westerns.
Again it took me a while to read this series and I only read these books in the last ten to fifteen years but they are so well written and detailed. The world building is more than epic and you can see where the books that have followed this series borrow from.
Think a re-read is in order in next year or two!
10 - The Drenai Series by David Gemmell
An excellent action packed book that gave more back story to one of my favourite Star Wars characters. Read this book really quick. Great Sci-fi.
Discworld - Terry Pratchett
You may be surprised that Terry Pratchett isn't in the top ten but I have a love/hate relationship with his books.
I tried his early books at High School and couldn't get into them.
Since then I have read his more recent books including Hogfather and The Truth. So far The Truth is my favourite as I was in stitches and read it within a week.
Sean Denton Series by Helen Cadbury
Hope you are all well.
I thought I would share my top ten favorite books or series so far, which have helped shape me as a person, a reader and a writer.

3 - The Ladybird books by various
What child of the Seventies and Eighties didn't grow up reading the Ladybird books. Classic tales of which some are Disney films now like Snow White.
My personal favourites are The Enormous Turnip, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Gingerbread Man. I spent many hours learning to read and reading these whilst in Primary school.
4 - The Adventures of Sherlock Hound books by Brenda Sivers
I remember re-reading the above Sherlock Hound books by Brenda Sivers as these were a funny spoof on Sherlock Holmes.
Although I can't remember the full stories now as they are sadly out of print but they have stuck with me for being funny reads at the time.
5 - Doctor Who - Terrance Dicks novels
I loved Doctor Who as a kid. My first Doctor being Peter Davidson and my favourite being Sylvester McCoy.
I also loved reading the adventures of the previous Doctors in Target books usually written by Terrance Dicks. Although some novels must have been written by other authors.
They were great escapism, travelling to distant worlds and times and I still read the new series Doctor Who books now from the Ninth Doctor onwards. They are short easy reads.
6 - Comics
Nowadays comics are for all ages with graphic novels being popular in the last few decades.
My favourite regular comic was Marvel UKs Transformers. Most of these older stories have been released in graphic novel form in the last few years in a collection. Some of these I have now bought.
I also loved the UK comics above especially Buster. They were very light hearted and fun.
I also collected other comics now and again including Spider-Man and Super Man.
7 - The Belgariad series by David Eddings
This series I read in the last five years although I had the series since the late nineties waiting on my shelf and I wish I had read it sooner.
It's an epic fantasy world filled with Gods, Wizards and the armies of good and evil.
Following the journey of Garion a humble farm boy to a wizard himself as his destiny is to destroy the evil God Torak.
After a slow start world building in book one the following books go at a cracking pace and in 2020 I will be reading the sequel series The Malloreon.
8 - The Riftwar Saga by Raymond E Feist
It starts similar to the Belgariad but instead of Garion, orphan Pug becomes apprentice to Magician Kulgan and eventually is a master Magician.
The epic scope of this series is bigger than the Belgariad as it has the world building of two worlds to deal with. Midkemia and Kelewan. Two very different worlds yet they also have similarities.

Think a re-read is in order in next year or two!
10 - The Drenai Series by David Gemmell
Wow so far my favourite set of books by my favourite author David Gemmell.
I was first introduced to the Drenai books at High School by my friend Geoff. A couple of years later and I bought the first four books from Fantasy and SF Book club. I collected the lot plus more series by David Gemmell and sadly they sat waiting on my shelves for me to read. Looking back I wish I had read them when I got them.
Now I am making my way through the Drenai novels and nearing the last ones. I've almost finished Winter Warriors which is one of my favourites as it involves more magic than previous books.
Yes the Drenai series is light on magic in the first few books just having out of body experience and some demon activity.
Although it is the writing and characters that make the books so awesome plus the action scenes. Without Gemmell there probably wouldn't be Grimdark fantasy which is similar to Gemmells work but even darker.
Luckily I met David in Leeds before his passing. He was gone too soon. I was lucky enough to attend the last Gemmell Awards for Fantasy too.
Books/Series that just missed the top ten :-
Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter by Michael Reaves
Discworld - Terry Pratchett
You may be surprised that Terry Pratchett isn't in the top ten but I have a love/hate relationship with his books.
I tried his early books at High School and couldn't get into them.
Since then I have read his more recent books including Hogfather and The Truth. So far The Truth is my favourite as I was in stitches and read it within a week.
Sean Denton Series by Helen Cadbury
I don't usually read crime but having helped out on two Cleckheaton Literature Festivals in the last few years I met author Helen Cadbury. She was a sweet helpful woman who has sadly passed and gone too soon.
I read her first two books in the Sean Denton Series and they are well written crime novels and locally based in York and Doncaster.
I've to read her third and final book in the series Race to the Kill which I will read in 2020.
Also will read more Leigh Russell books too in 2020 as they are enjoyable crime romps too.
Unknown Sci-fi books.
When I was in my mid teens I read two books from the library which were young sci-fi books. I think they were part of a trilogy and the main character was a space pilot.
I loved the books but the only bit I remember is the pilot crashing on a planet and having to help the locals. It had a Doctor Who vibe and had lots of action.
Does anyone know what these books could be?
Please let me know in comments section here or on Facebook or Twitter.
Thanks x

Birthday Book Haul
Hi guys
Yesterday was my 43rd birthday and was lucky enough to have a girlfriend who knows what a book nerd I am.
She also got the right books I wanted.
Red Seas under Red Skies and The Republic of Thieves - books 2 and 3 in Scott Lynchs Gentleman Bastard series and join book 1 browning on my bookcase.
Also there is R J Barkers The Bone Ships. The start in a new trilogy by a local Leeds author although I have still to read his Age of Assassins trilogy.
As I've had a rubbish reading year this year - only reading my fourth book of 2019 then next year will dedicate a lot more time to reading and writing!
Has anyone read these?
Well catch u later x

Terminator - Dark Fate - Film Review - Spoilers
Hi guys
Well I went to watch the newest Terminator sequel/reboot which i don't think was needed but quite enjoyed it.
This film ignores all the other sequels after T2 so they are now not canon which annoyed me as I wanted to know who sent the good Terminator back in Terminator Genysis.
So the film starts off a year after T2 and what Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) doesn't know is that before they destroyed Skynet in the past it sent a couple of Terminators through to the past as a last ditch attempt to kill John Connor and shock, horror as Sarah and John are relaxing a T-800 (Arnie) model guns down John Connor.
This is a bit of a shock as he had been the main player in T2 and past films and was built up as mans saviour.
So switch to Mexico where we follow a young (short) woman called Dani Ramos (Natalia Reyes) who is now a target from a newer further future where the AI is called Legion instead of Skynet but it's basically the same just in the future named differently.
Legion has sent back it's version of a Terminator called a Rev-9 which can split in two with the main part being liquid metal so it's like a T-800 and T-1000 in one and slightly different and a darker metal. The Rev-9 is played by Gabriel Luna who was great as Ghostrider on Agents of Shield.
Added to the mix as Dani's protector is Grace (Mackenzie Davies) who is a human hybrid cyborg from Dani's future.
Plus one woman Terminator hater Sarah Connor joins them on a mission for revenge after the death of John.
Once they have met up they decide to find whoever has been texting Sarah with Co-ordinance of incoming Terminators for her to kill and see if they can help them.
After about an hour into the film they finally find the T-800 who killed John who has decided not to follow his programme and settled down with family and re-named himself Carl.
At first Sarah wants to kill him but relents as it shows machines and man can live together in peace.
Overall - there is plenty of action and the effects are great but it feels like I've watched most of it before in past films.
Also the time travel in the film bugged me abit as didn't make total sense.
It also bugged me that in the future a five foot woman could be a tough resistance leader and take on five men on her own as she does in the film in a flash forward. It wasn't believable.
Also Dani's protector Grace isn't great as she can only fight in short bursts before needing to cool down and take medicine like a Universal Soldier.
There are some funny moments with Arnies Carl talking about Drapes and the new Rev-9 Model is slick and blends in easier than previous Termintors.
Sadly I don't think the film was needed and it's bad it's making a loss.
Score 7/10

November Update and Nanowrimo!
Hi Folks
Just a quick post to update you all.
Sadly yet again I didn't blog as much as I wanted to but have a few blogs coming up in the next week including a film review and my top ten books.
Also I'm miffed I still haven't finished reading Winter Warriors by David Gemmell. I started it on Fourth of July so four months reading it but really enjoying it. A review will come soon. Maybe this week.
As it's November that means Nanowrimo. As I'm late into it and haven't even written for about a year I won't be partaking in it this year. Plus the last two attempts have been appalling. I just think November is the wrong time of year for me with my birthday in November then getting ready for Xmas and all the Xmas things coming up like markets etc.
So I will give Nanowrimo a break this year and concentrate on getting into my writing slowly. Maybe finishing a few short stories. As long as I start writing that's the important thing. Besides 50,000 words is alot.
Anyway if your attempting Nanowrimo good luck and whatever you do, enjoy your reading and writing.

Fast n Furious - Hobbs and Shaw - Film Review
Went to see the Fast and Furious spin off - Hobbs and Shaw for a bit of mindless fun and action.
I have to admit I enjoyed it more than the Fast and Furious core films.
Part of this is that we have already been introduced to the characters.
Lawman Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne (the rock) Johnson and ex marine and criminal Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham.
The pair are a great comedic double act taking the piss out of each other but finally respecting each other.
The plot is standard action affair where the bad guys are led by Idris Elba who has a past with Shaw. He is also enhanced like Captain America and chasing Shaws little sister Hattie played by Vanessa Kirby who has injected herself with a super virus to protect it from the bad guys.
The film moves along at a fast and furious pace with plenty of action scenes, fights and explosions. On top of this are the quips and tongue in cheek fun and you get a great film to turn your mind off to.
Overall - a great action romp where someone should time travel to the eighties and remake it with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Van Damme!
Score - 8/10

Spooky October Update
Hi Folks
Hope you're all reading and writing well?
As you can tell from my previous posts September wasn't as good as I thought it would be. With promises of more posts about Edge-lit 2019 among other things and I was going to get back into writing.
Sadly I haven't. This maybe because life took other. Too much travelling to work and back. Home late so procrastinating with Youtube and crap T.V.
I haven't even finished Winter Warriors by David Gemmell and been reading it 3 months.
Part of me is unsure about my future as a writer and the imposter syndrome has taken over giving me doubt of actually being a writer.
I'm hoping I can shake this feeling off and get back to blogging more as I definitely want to do the Edge-lit posts this month and hope to get back on my laptop and write.
So hopefully will post and chat soon people x
Have any of you writers also had doubts?

Hols Update - York
Hi Guys
In August was meant to do some Edge-lit reviews and I probably will at the weekend maybe before.
The reason for my inactivity is that I've just had a week holiday chilling out looking after my daughter.
This included staying a lot at girlfriends plus trips out to Xscape where I loved Laser Quest.
Also we had a great day in York. I even had a mini book haul of one book.
Enjoy the pics and will be blogging more soon.
This will include Edge-lit content, my top ten books and thoughts on writing.
Lastly my Book Haul - The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch.
I've been wanting to collect this series since I read brilliant reviews in SFX magazine back in 2006 when it came out.

August Update - Edge-Lit Reviews and more ..
Hi Folks
August is upon us already and apologies for July as I didn't post anything from after the fourteenth!
I hope to post more this month especially as I'm off work for a week. This will at least help me get some Edge-lit reviews out.
Here's a quick guide as to what I hopefully will do in August.
- Do reviews of Edge-Lit. Preferably in first week whilst off work.
- Get writing - was meant to compete in Camp Nano but didn't even start. This month will be different.
- Finish reading Winter Warriors by David Gemmell.
- Read more this month if I can but my main focus for August is writing.
- Enter writing competitions.
Well that my outline for this August writing, blogging and reading wise.
Hope you like the picture taken locally and not pinched off the internet like normal.
See you all soon x
