Spiderman - Across the Spiderverse - Film Review

Hi Nerds

Took the daughter to see the sequel to 2018's Spiderman - Into the Spiderverse.  The blockbuster and award winner of that year.

Could the sequel hold up? I think it just about makes the grade.  Only just though.

The film starts off about a year after the first film, with Miles getting used to his powers and growing into his own, as a Spiderman.  What comes with this is his school work suffering and his constant lying to his parents.

It also shows Spider-Gwen being recruited to a multiverse Spiderman society, led by Spiderman 2099 (Oscar Isaac). He is trying to make sure the multiverse isn't destroyed by making sure all the Spider-men go through their cannon event.  This usually means losing a family member or people close.  For example the death of Uncle Ben.

Added into the mix is a new villain called The Spot, who is also getting used to his powers and blames Miles for loosing his family and life, as he was given his powers when the collider exploded at the end of the first film.  As his powers grow he realises he can travel to different universe's and swears revenge on Miles.  He becomes the big threat of the film.

Although there is confrontation between Miles and Spiderman 2099 as Miles wants to get back and save his Dad.

Overall - as with the first film, the visuals are great.  Especially as we go to different universe's and see different animation styles.  That includes Lego.  The plot didn't make as much sense to me.  If the Spider-men have to go through their cannon event, then hasn't Miles already done so, with the death of his Uncle Aaron in the first film?  Maybe some have to endure more than one heartbreak?

The voice acting and action are great.  It was also fun to spot the other various versions of Spiderman.  It was also darker than the previous film.  Especially the last third of the film, which has a great cliffhanger.

Some parts of the film are questionable, including Peter B Parker, Mile's mentor from the first film bringing his new baby to fight.  It doesn't seem in character.

Sadly we will have to wait a full year to see how this will end, and if it will join with the MCU's Secret Wars film.

Bels Score   -   9.5/10

My Score     -   9/10
