Book Review - Doctor Who - Winner Takes All by Jacqueline Rayner

Hi

Have now read four books out of twenty from the two box sets I bought years ago from The Book People.  This being the third book in box set one.  I jumped to the fourth book The Deviant Strain way back in December 2016 (time goes so fast).  This was because the setting for Winner Takes All is set in the block of flats Rose lives on and looked boring.

So was Winner Takes All boring?  Yes and No.  It's a weird book which reads well but some parts just don't work out.

Ninth Doctor who was played brilliantly by Christopher Eccleston and Rose (Billie Piper) call home to see Roses mum Jackie.
All is not well as a scratch card is giving away either free consoles or free holidays in a special promotion run by people in porcupine costumes.

Only they aren't costumes and they are a porcupine looking warrior race called the Quevvils who are finding a champion through the consoles to break an enemy stronghold.  What the console players don't realise is they are controlling the people who have won holidays.  Having been transported and made to wear a control device to play the game to their deaths.

It's up to the Doctor, Rose and her ex boyfriend Mickey to save the day and rescue the people on the alien planet.

Overall  -  Even though I skipped the book before I'm glad I read it as it is fun in places and the author does a good job of capturing Ninth Doctor and Roses personalities.  The POV is usually from another character watching what the Doctor does and we never get the Doctor's POV.  Main POV are Rose and a boy called Robert who is trapped on the Alien planet.
A gripe I have is with the Doctor's rescue plan which didn't make great sense and it was more luck and circumstances that he rescued the day.

Score   -   6/10

Next book to read  -  Doctor Who - Only Human by Gareth Roberts
